Orthopaedic Surgery
Courses      Clerkships

This rotation allows medical students to gain exposure to a broad variety of PM&R practices. Students should email Erin Nelligan, to communicate any preferences of how they’d like to spend the rotation. For Stanford students, this rotation may fulfill your selective 1 or elective requirements. Typically, students spend time in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The Stanford Spine Clinic focuses on the diagnosis and comprehensive conservative and interventional treatment of spine disorders (that is, neck and back pain, spinal stenosis and radiculopathy). The Stanford Sports Clinic focuses on the conservative management of musculoskeletal and sports injuries, including acute, subacute and chronic cases. Goals include adequate exposure to the medical management of spine and sports injuries, physical disabilities and team management. Experience on the Stanford inpatient PM&R consultation service is also available for those interested in the evaluation of patients for rehabilitation potential. The Palo Alto VA polytrauma rehabilitation center is one of five specialized centers in the nation treating active duty military brain injuries. At the Palo Alto VA, students may also spend time on the dedicated spinal cord injury inpatient service, at outpatient musculoskeletal clinics, at the electromyography clinic and at prosthetics clinic. Students can also arrange to spend time on this rotation on SCVMC inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation services. Please note: Visiting students must obtain approval before applying for this clerkship. To request approval, please contact Erin Nelligan at
