Preclinical Instruction focuses on relieving the disability, disfigurement, and discomfort associated with skin disease. To upgrade medical care of skin diseases, the department offers several courses and urges participation in patient care in the clinic and hospital settings of the SUMC, PAVAMC, Kaiser (Redwood City), LPCH and private practice offices. Students are also assigned to attend daily teaching conferences designed for the training of departmental residents and postgraduate fellows.

Clinical Instruction includes lectures, general dermatology clinics, and subspecialty clinics in cutaneous lymphoma, skin immunology, contact dermatitis, oral medicine, mole and pigmented tumor, melanoma, pediatric dermatology, dermatologic surgery, laser surgery, and epidermolysis bullosa. Students will be expected to learn how to describe and recognize morphology, to perform a thorough skin examination, and basic diagnostic procedures. Coordinator: Lane.

Residency Program is a three-year program accredited by the American Board of Dermatology. The program is designed to provide training that will enable residents to achieve a high degree of competence in clinical dermatology, as well as special training in the basic sciences pertinent to the practice, teaching, and research of dermatology. Residents rotate through teaching units at SUMC, PAVAMC, SCVMC, and LPCH. The program provides an educational environment with broad spectrum and in-depth training in general dermatology, pediatric dermatology, skin surgery, immunodermatology, dermatopathology, and mycology. Daily teaching conferences and weekly grand rounds cover all phases of clinical dermatology and basic sciences. Emphasis is placed on the care of skin diseases in the outpatient clinic, and inpatient wards. Residents are encouraged to pursue research projects in clinical and investigative dermatology. Coordinator: Lane.

Postdoctoral Training opportunities are available. For information, refer to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs home page at http://postdocs.stanford.edu/ or the departmental home page.
