Preclinical Instruction is carried out in hand surgery, adult orthopedic surgery, spine surgery, pediatric orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, and physiatry. Most of the courses offered are intended to provide students with a basic overview of these specialties, with emphasis on common disorders, examination of patients, clinical testing, diagnosis, and treatment.
Clinical Instruction is designed to provide students with a broad background in clinical surgery or physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). Emphasis in all clerkships is on the application of preclinical knowledge to commonly encountered clinical problems. Instruction includes current developments in patient management as well as research in the specialty. The clerkships also should enable students to become better acquainted with opportunities in surgical research.
Residency Programs offer training in orthopedics, and physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R). To broaden the scope of experience, PAVAMC, KPMC at Santa Clara, and SCVMC are incorporated into SUMC programs. Each hospital adds a unique element to the total surgical experience for the SUMC trainee. Each program is supervised by full-time surgical faculty members and administered by the department. Coordinators: Gamble, McAdams-Orthopedics; Date-PMR.
Orthopedic Surgery is a five-year accredited and integrated program in the management of adults and children with orthopaedic problems. A wide range and diversity of teaching material is available at affiliated hospitals.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a three-year program coordinated by that division. Residents are admitted to the program after completing an internship elsewhere. SCVMC, PAVMC and SUMC are the main teaching hospitals used. The program leads to eligibility to become certified in PM&R.
Research Studies are in progress in all surgical divisions. Preclinical or clinical students interested in surgical research opportunities should contact the various divisional offices. Coordinator: Smith .
Postdoctoral Training opportunities are available. For information, refer to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs home page at http://postdocs.stanford.edu/ or the departmental home page.
